Beeswax versus paraffin candles: what actually burns differently
The candle category is full of claims that are hard to verify without burning the thing yourself. Beeswax is often described as cleaner, longer-burning, and better for indoor air quality. Paraffin is cheaper and more consistent. Both descriptions are broadly true, but the details matter if you're choosing candles for regular use at a dining table.
Burn time and drip behaviour
Beeswax has a higher melting point than paraffin. Around 62-65°C versus 46-68°C for paraffin, depending on the blend. In practice, this means a beeswax taper burns more slowly and drips less in a draught-free environment. The pair of tapers we carry burns for approximately nine hours total, which is two to three dinner parties depending on how long you keep the table.
Paraffin tapers in the same size will typically burn for six to seven hours. The trade-off is that paraffin is more consistent in colour and shape, since it's a refined petroleum product with tightly controlled properties. Beeswax varies slightly between batches because it's a natural material.
Scent and indoor air quality
Pure beeswax has a faint honey scent when burning. Noticeable in a small room, barely perceptible in a large one. This is why Ruth carries unscented beeswax rather than scented: the wax itself has a character, and adding a fragrance oil on top of it creates a muddle. At a dinner table, any additional scent competes with food.
On air quality: beeswax is sometimes described as 'negative ion producing', which is a claim that's difficult to substantiate in a domestic setting. What is true is that pure beeswax produces less soot than low-grade paraffin. A well-trimmed wick (3-4mm before lighting) is the bigger variable regardless of wax type.
What to look for when buying
For beeswax: look for 100% pure beeswax, not a beeswax blend. Blended candles often contain 10-20% beeswax mixed with paraffin or soy. They're sold as beeswax candles but behave like paraffin ones. The colour should be a warm amber-yellow; very pale beeswax has usually been heavily filtered, which removes some of the natural compounds.
For paraffin: a food-grade or cosmetic-grade paraffin is cleaner-burning than industrial-grade. If you're buying paraffin tapers, look for ones with a cotton wick rather than a metal-cored wick, which can produce a small amount of metallic soot.
